I began the 20th century in the Australian outback working as a lay preacher in the bush. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I was depressed by the conditions that I found there. So with the blessings of the church, I formed a missionary to help improve the bush. At first people balked, but as time went on, they came to accept me. I believe the people’s sentiment is best summed up in this quote: "Funny thing about Flynn. He looked liked a bloke from the city, but he always had the smell of the bush about him." Some went so far as to say that I gave the bush its voice. To learn more about what I did to help revolutionize the Australian Outback, you can visit: http://www.abc.net.au/btn/australians/flynn.htm If you live in Ventura Country in California, fear not, I have not been shirking my duties as a member of the Board of Supervisors. I still am passionate about the Kiddy Beach Clean-up, Beach Issues at the Harbor, Hollywood and Silverstrand Beaches, and the El Rio Sewer Project. More information can be found at: http://www.countyofventura.org/bos/dist5.asp Please feel free to contact me or one of my many administrative assistants. (I recommend contacting Jim Estomo first because he’s by far the dreamiest of the bunch)
To those of you who are science fiction enthusiast and are subsequently enrolled in classes at Towson University, you simply must stop by my office so we can share a cup of coffee. I just love regaling students and fans alike with the theories I put forth in my books “Cinematic Vampires,” “Phantoms of the Opera,” “The Films of Arnold Schwarzenegger,” and “Dissecting Aliens.” And if you're nice (and only if you're nice), I'll show you the rarer selections of my James Bond Memorabillia Collection. http://www.towson.edu/~flynn/Welcome.html
As much as I love show business, sometimes I need to take a break from it all. When that happens, I find solace and peace in the fine and oft neglected art of quilting. I especially enjoy designing with the Wheel of Mystery block. It’s well known that I didn’t set out to be a quilter, I mean, does this look like the face of a quilter? <quilt.jpg> But as my love of quilting grew it was clear that I was a force to be reckoned with in quilting circles. So I started up my own quilting frame company. http://www.flynnquilt.com/ I’ve also recently begun a new fabric line with Benartex. Yes, that Benartex. I can hardly believe my good fortune. If you’re interested in taking one of my classes, or of getting a free book, then stop by the website! I love sharing tips and projects with fellow quilters, or fans of quilting. Now, my pen has been called “poisonous” at times. And I know that along the way some people have felt the sting of it. But my first was none other that FDR. What can I say? I felt like he betrayed me, nay us, when he took the side of big business. If you want to know more about my feelings of fascism or maybe join my committee, Keep America Out of War Committee (KAOWC), check this out:http://www.thenewamerican.com/tna/2000/01-31-2000/vo16no03_flynn.htm While attending Yale and Columbia, geology was my passion, especially integrating biostratigraphy, paleomagnetic stratigraphy, and radioisotopic dating. And my discovery of fossil mammal faunas in South America, which provided a better understanding of South American mammal faunal evolution and biogeography lead to my winning the 4th Annual Alfred Sherwood Romer Prize. (and let me tell you, we partied like it was the paelolitic period!) Anyone interested in the integration of paleontologic and geologic techniques, particularly those emphasizing patterns of paleobiologic change through space and geologic time, or any aspect of mammalian phylogeny should contact me here: http://fm1.fieldmuseum.org/aa/staff_page.cgi?staff=flynn In 1968, I wanted to promote enduring knowledge and a strong sense of community, especially in Australia. So naturally I did what anyone would do: I created my own college. The approach is simple: combine innovative practices with tried and tested means to provide a 'holistic' network of support for learning that helps to cultivate a self-directed and motivated learning environment. That, and supply all students with fresh weekly linens. http://www.johnflynn.org/ | ||||||||
